Outcome Studies CLEAN BREAK OUTCOME STUDY, 1990 CLEAN BREAK OUTCOME STUDY, 1995CLEAN BREAK OUTCOME STUDY, 1990 March 16, 1990 In February 1990, Clean Break did a telephone survey of 400 randomly selected clients who had completed the program at United Hospital, Edina Community Center, and Hopkins Eisenhower Community Center between January and December 1987. Participants are defined as paying customers who completed all five classroom sessions during the first week, paid for the program, and continued into the telephone follow-up counseling portion of the program. There was an attrition rate of approximately 25% between the first and fifth sessions—this group was not counted or surveyed. The Clean Break consists of 5 two-hour class sessions during a 7-day period, followed by three months of individual telephone counseling: 3-4 calls per week during the first two weeks, 2-3 calls per week during the third and fourth weeks, and approximately one call per week during weeks five through twelve. Average counseling call duration was approximately 15 minutes. 44% of the participants studied were males, and 56% female. The average age of the males was 44. The average age of the females was 46. Males had smoked for an average of 24 years at an average rate of 1.45 packs per day. Females had smoked an average of 24 years at an average rate of 1.3 packs per day. Of our total sample of 400 clients, we were able to contact 322 participants.
Of this group, 124 (or 38.5%) were smoking cigarettes again regularly.
186 (or 57.76%) had not used tobacco products since attending the program.
12 (or 3.7%) had used tobacco products since attending the program, but
were currently tobacco-free. CLEAN BREAK OUTCOME STUDY, 1995 June 15, 1995 The following are the results of a telephone survey of 320 randomly selected participants in Clean Break Smokers' Treatment Program between March 1992 and July 1993 at United Hospital in St. Paul, MN, the Edina Community Center in Edina, MN, and Manhattan Plaza Health Club in New York City. Structurally, Clean Break Smokers' Treatment Program consists of 5 two-hour class sessions during the first week, followed by three months of individual telephone counseling. Participants are taught cognitive decision making-skills, emphasizing personal responsibility and accepting discomfort to get benefits. "Participants" are defined as those individuals who complete all five sessions of the program, pay the fee, and continue into telephone follow-up counseling. We did not count participants who drop out of the program between sessions one and five, and do not pay the program fee, approximately 25% of "all comers." 51% of the survey group was males, and 49% female. The average age for males was 49. The average age for females was 45. Males had smoked for an average of 30 years at a rate of 1.6 packs per day. On average, females had smoked 26 years at a rate of 1.44 packs per day. Between May 10 and June 5, 1995, we were able to contact 255 members of our survey group. Of the people we contacted, 98 (38.4%) were using tobacco products daily. 144 (56.5%) had not used tobacco since attending the program. 13 (6%) had used tobacco since attending the program, but were currently smoke free. |
